Situation
Comparing schedules with colleagues was nurses’ top request. The team leaned toward comparing many people at once: too much for a small team, with no research program and a calendar already short on space.
Task
Define an MVP that would delight nurses without overwhelming a small design and engineering team.

Reviews singled out schedule comparison
Research
Built a 500-nurse advisory group with my PM. Nearly 80% responded, and 197 shared feature ideas.
Combined every signal: the survey, Intercom tickets, social media, and app store reviews, with marketing and support.
Found the scope in the data. More than half the requests were one-to-one, not one-to-many.

Weighing entry points. The low-disruption option won; the others buried the feature or didn’t scale past two people.
Design
Put the entry point on the colleagues screen, so multi-person comparison could be added later without reworking the flow.
Cut the noise. Calendar squares already held pay days, holidays, shifts, and worksites, so comparison showed only what mattered.
Validated fast with Figma prototypes built from our design system, plus a guerrilla test with a visiting nurse.

Three explorations for marking shared days: color coding, “You” labels, and avatars.
Learnings
Let evidence set the scope. The one-to-one MVP shipped quickly, and when nurses asked to compare with more colleagues, the design was already built for it.
